This event has ended.

This is the first show of Jerry Saltz’s work in New York, containing paintings, photographs, historical items, and of course, his literary quotes.
Take a visual trip through the lifetime and art of someone who believes da Vinci probably didn’t paint Salvator Mundi, that copyright is dead, and that the best coffee comes in a double gulp cup from a gas station.
All works will be for sale.

Jerry Saltz was born in Chicago and began his art career there, first as a painter, most famously with his visual depiction of Dante’s Divine Comedy, and then as co-creator of the N.A.M.E. Gallery on West Superior.

In 1979 Saltz moved to New York, and a year later completely separated himself from his artistic past by taking a job as a long-distance truck driver. A decade of driving and trying to read Artforum allowed him time to ponder the complexities of the art world, occasionally escaping the solitude via CB Radio, under the handle “The Jewish Cowboy”. This was Saltz’s first, tiny taste of opening to a bunch of random strangers, or “followers” as they are now called.

Having honed his linguistic and critical thinking skills over years sitting behind the wheel, by 1998 Saltz found himself sitting behind a desk at the Village Voice, writing about the many art galleries and studios he visited incessantly. Critical acclaim rightly followed over the subsequent years. He is currently the Pulitzer Prize-winning Senior Art Critic for New York Magazine.

He has in recent years found a large audience he can directly communicate with, not on air, but online as a social media star.
Saltz has recently returned to his own artistic roots with physical interventions: renaming the fountains at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and adding illustrations to NYC manhole covers. The completion of his 50-year artistic circle is the perfect time to premiere Saltz’s work in the city where “criticism never sleeps.”

Jerry Saltz is married and lives between an apartment in Manhattan and a cottage in Connecticut.
