Ed. Varie presents Us, a group exhibition curated by David Ai Wang, including artists Nicolas Atkins, Casey Bolding, Yoo Hee Chang, Amanda Elle, Stephen Hamilton, Kate Klingbeil, Kiji McCafferty, Eva O’Leary, Alina Perez, Gao Rong, Jo Rosenthal, Nick Sethi, David Ai Wang, and Phyllis Yao.
Us is a group show exhibiting fourteen artists that emphasize the importance of self-determined identity. Rather than abiding to the tastes, tropes, and frameworks determined by unchecked inertia, the artists in this exhibition challenge the terms of their representation. Us exhibits a body of work that is influenced by cultural and personal histories as well as different disciplines of art-making. Us proudly celebrates the beauty and complexities of these different voices together in the same space.
Nicolas Atkins is a multidisciplinary artist living and working with New York City as a base for the past 18 years.
Casey Bolding, b. 1987 Denver, Colorado. Currently lives and works in Brooklyn. Casey Bolding’s anxious and often subliminally suggestive works are brief glimpses into the humanoid yin yang. Although he is known primarily for painting, ‘the language of human libido and the suffering of desire demands expression by any means necessary’. Through extensive experimentation in both medium and substrate, Casey’s work takes on a high art facade, executed with low brow materials.
Yoo Hee Chang, b. 1991, raised in Seoul Korea. Chang has a BFA in painting from Rhode Island School of Design in 2014. Chang currently lives and works in Chicago and Seoul.
Amanda Elle, b. 1993, lives and works in Philadelphia. Amanda Elle holds a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design and is a self taught performance artist.
Stephen Hamilton is an artist and arts educator living and working in Boston Massachusetts. Born and raised in Roxbury, Stephen graduated from Massachusetts College of Art and design in 2009 with a focus in illustration. Since then, he has taught and mentored in the arts at College Bound Dorchester, Artists For Humanity, and at Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
Kate Klingbeil, b. 1990 currently resides in Brooklyn. She received her BFA from California College of the Arts in 2012. Her tactile multi-media work moves between painting, ceramics and animation to examine the psychology of desire, toxicity, body language and memory as a young woman today.
Kiji McCafferty was born in Japan and raised in New York. He received his first formal training in Tibetan Buddhist Thangka painting while on a sojourn in Nepal at the age of 17. He graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Industrial Design.
Eva O’Leary, b. 1989, currently lives and works between New York and Central Pennsylvania. O’Leary received a BFA from California College of the Arts in 2012, and an MFA from Yale in 2016. She was the recipient of the Hyères Festival Photographie Grand Prix in 2018, The Vontobel Contemporary Photography Prize in 2017, and was named a Foam Talent in 2014.
Alina Perez, b. 1995 is a visual artist from Miami, Florida, where she currently lives and works, alongside her service dog Sammy. In 2017, Alina and Sammy graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Painting. They have attended residencies at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, the OxBow School of Art, the Anderson Ranch Arts Center, and a fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center. This fall, Alina and Sammy will be attending a fellowship residency at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown.
Gao Rong, b. 1986 in Hang Jin Hou Qi, Inner Mongolia. She received her BA from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, China. Using needle and thread, Gao Rong transforms domestic items into installations of visual language, referencing the traditionally feminine craft of folk embroidery. She often assimilates entire replicas of cars, tables, washing machines and other household objects in fabrics that invite further inspection and are crafted over weeks in Gao’s labored hand.
Jo Rosenthal, b. 6969 in Miami, Florida currently lives and work in Chinatown, New York City. She has a dual degree in Fine Arts and Non-Fiction Writing with an Art History minor from Parson. Her work often questions just how personal she can get with an audience by opening herself up as much as possible. Through oil painting, performance, book-making, and installation, Rosenthal communicates her own journey.
Nick Sethi is an artist living in NYC and working in a variety of mediums. His work focuses on the ever-changing meanings and relationships of ideas, images, people, and materials over time as they move through the physical and digital worlds. Nick’s recently released book, Khichdi (Kitchari), published by Dashwood Books, chronicles 10 years of his photography in India, exploring a decade of changes in the country, as well as himself.
Phyllis Yao is a second generation Chinese-American who grew up between Guiyang, China where her mom resides permanently and New York with her dad’s family. Phyllis graduated with a BFA in painting at the Rhode Island School of Design and has been an artist-in-residence at Lijiang Studio in China.
David Wang, b. 1991, Bethlehem, PA was raised in Singapore until age 7, then returned to the US and grew up in Boston, MA. Wang has a BFA in Painting from Rhode Island School of Design 2015. Wang currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
