New Release presents Any Day Now, Riley Payne’s first exhibition with the gallery and first solo show in New York.

Drawing on the pictorial formulas of stock photography – pre-loaded with sly market research psychology and the mundanity of the everyday - Payne makes labor-intensive graphite drawings that attempt to tease out new connections and coincidences between seemingly disparate visual elements.

With the inclusion (or exclusion via vacant spaces of un-rendered white paper) of snippets of text, recognizable shapes and lighter scribble, Payne’s drawings are alternately humorous, jarring and harmonious; leading to unexpected mental associations.

Images of craft, labour, nature and leisure become neutral fields for quick and impulsive mark-making (though in this case the mark making is slowed down to a crawl, a space where the viewer is asked to contemplate the inevitable question – ‘why bother?’). However, by choosing to re-render images, humor, contextualization and ambiguity leads to productive ongoing dialogues on modern topics.
