This event has ended.

Big Snack brings together the work of Cornell’s visual arts M.F.A. candidates and features an exhibition essay by artist, writer, and former visiting critic, William Powhida.

The exhibition reflects ongoing material and conceptual student research, resulting in work ranging from wall- and floor-based sculpture to photography, video, and painting. The title of the show suggests the conundrum faced by many M.F.A. students planning group exhibitions: how to fit a diverse set of practices and concerns into a single gallery space. Does the viewer get a sufficient taste of each artist’s work?

Exhibiting artists include second-year M.F.A. students Kate Huffman, Kaleb Hunkele, Alexander Jahani, Sasha Phyars-Burgess, Gabriel Ramos, and Richard Zimmerman; and first-year M.F.A. students Bruno Cançado, Vladislav Markov, Chet Moye, Brice Peterson, Libby Rosa, and Sophia Starling.

Cornell’s two-year Master of Fine Arts program encourages both interdisciplinary and medium-specific practices, augmented by access to the breadth of fields of study across the university. In addition to a number of visiting artists, the Department of Art hosts two distinguished Teiger Mentors in the Arts annually, including recent mentors Dana Hoey and Sam Lewitt, and provides exhibition opportunities in Ithaca and New York City. The graduate program, directed by Associate Professor Carl Ostendarp, also features the use of exceptional facilities, an exploratory international travel experience, and generous tuition remission.
