hpgrp GALLERY NEW YORK presents “Beyond the Craft”, the latest works by Tokyo-based artist/graphic designer/art director Tatsuki Ikezawa.

Various fields have become rapidly digitalised nowadays. We are already living in a post digital era. Although digitalisation has greatly affected the arts and creative fields, the actual craft has not been developed enough even though people generally think that digital arts can be restored or copied. Therefore, I want to pursue innovative craft and artistic elements while using digital arts as a motif.

What I have done is to merge a sense of the human with the digital arts.
I wanted to show the possible transformation of digital art from objects to living things. To make it more realistic, I used accidental, organic expressions that come from this consolidation, and I tried to capture the meaning of traditional craft properties such as manual techniques, minuteness and textures.
Firstly, I created a series of photos, which I took in one attempt. Generally, these kinds of expressions are created by computer graphics, but in my work subjects are manually made-up and handmade.

Secondly, I made a series of visual and solid (3D) art. My aim was to create them by hand, even though 2D or 3D digital printers would have made the process easier with printing, carving and giving them form. And there are some pieces that I intentionally created to look analogue, when in reality they were created using digital techniques.
These expressions were attempts to incorporate the feeling of the head and hand of a person in the process while being basically digital, and accidental expressions born from handling digital like human hands so far as to make craft techniques. I tried to push the boundaries and create new craft properties and artistry. -Tatsuki Ikezawa
