Onishi Project presents its fourth of a series of summer group shows for this year. This group features six international artists: Armando Sebastian, Kengo Kanda, Matei Vogel, Rita BasuMallick, Sarah Elyse Granetz and James McCormick.

Armando Sebastian was born in Monterrey, Mexico. Not quite a decade ago, Sebastian decided to begin his career anew as an artist in Dallas, Texas, where he now resides. Manga, folk art, and 18th-century painting inform and inspire his work. His paintings represent a fusion of religious iconography and magical realism.
Kengo Kanda, born and raised in Hiroshima, Japan. His work was exhibited at Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and had his first solo exhibition at Kobun Gallery, Tokyo in 2016. Kanda also obtained his medical license and graduated from Medical Department of National University in 2006 and began his career as a plastic surgeon in 2008.

Matei Vogel was born in 1985 in Winterthur, Switzerland where he currently lives and works. Matei discovered his passion for the visual arts after returning from an international music competition in Italy in 2008, passing by the city of Florence where he had a unique encounter with some of the great and influential local artists. Today, he works with the Japanese pianist Masaru Yoshitake. They have met each other in Berlin in 2014, when they started a first collaboration. In 2016, Matei was appointed to work in an atelier of an ancient industrial building in Winterthur, followed by an intense and creative period.

Rita BasuMallick born in India, and now a New Yorker for over a decade, Rita has traveled all through her life, lived across cities and has internalized different ways of living. She trained in painting at New York University and works in acrylic, oil and charcoal. Her paintings are expressions of the way she sees life - a harmony of emotions, cultures and nature. Rita also obtained a CPA license from New York State and graduated from NYU Stern School of Business with an MBA in Finance.

Sarah Elyse Granetz grew up in Wilton, Connecticut and currently lives in New York, New York. She received her B.A. in Fine Arts from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. During this time, Sarah studied in Paris, France. What began as a “self portrait” assignment has transformed into My Body Is Not For Sale, a meditative series on the female form through literal impressions of the artist’s actual body. Sarah also works as a fashion stylist and is currently pursuing an MBA from American University.

James McCormick was born in Long Island, New York from an Italian and Irish heritage. He is a licensed physician who holds a Master’s in Business Administration from Pepperdine University. Turning his attention to his passion in photography, Jim’s portfolio is diverse stemming from his conventional earlier works to exploring and defining a new art domain which is abstract photography. His core materials are glass, oils, inks, and air. Using these materials, he has captured inventive vibrant images. He finds a quiet peacefulness in this art that takes the viewer to curious and introspective moments of reflection. His unconventional use of the camera lets him capture fluid movement of inanimate materials which creates these dramatic images.
