This event has ended.

A prick not a puncture. A horizon not a line. Thea Gregorius’ debut show at Larrie embeds itself in the quiet power of the mark. Each of her compositions on paper acts as mirror, as skin, absorbing the articulate force of the artist’s needle and the viewer’s eye.

With a steady hand and sharp pin from below, Gregorius creates terrains that evoke the impossibly uniform and ragged edges of obsession. Almost imperceptible, each strike is a pyramid – a pyramid that becomes a row that becomes a pattern. If one chases the logic of any mark, they find themselves yet again on the outside of an almost illegible grid. Like the slip into madness, progress feels at once incremental and instantaneous within the repetition of the landscape.

Manipulating space on a micro scale, Gregorius’ work emerges as a mediation on sculpture all the while retaining the intimacy and immediacy of drawing. Each work whispers with intensity of the two-sided.

Like the minimalists before her, Gregorius’ interest in doubling is inspired by the paradoxes we find in nature, especially in our own minds. If each of our impulses had a physical body, what might learn from the uneven marks we left? And maybe more importantly, is it possible we could discover how they fit together?

Thea Gregorius is an artist working primarily in printmaking and works on paper. She has been an artist-in residence at the Art Students League of New York, Vermont Studio Center, PLAYA Fellowship Program and Pyramid Atlantic Art Center. She holds a BFA from New York University and lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
