This event has ended.

Brennan & Griffin presents Carry the Bend, an exhibition of drawings and paintings from 1965 - 2018. With an emphasis on the lineage of gesture within the realm of abstract painting, the exhibition highlights works from the mid 1960’s to today. Bridging past to present, the exhibition expounds on the intimate nature of mark making within the arc of contemporary abstraction.

Works on paper from Al Held, Guy Goodwin and Louise Fishman dating from the mid 60’s to the late 70’s exemplify the turn towards a harder edge from the flowing gesture of abstract expressionism. Stanley Whitney, Joanne Greenbaum, Peter Acheson, Marina Adams, Candida Alvarez and Steve DiBenedetto’s work expands iconography through the searching and layering of gesture into form. Polly Apfelbaum, Bill Saylor and EJ Hauser’s anthropomorphic abstractions play with flattened geometry. Pamela Jorden, Spencer Lewis, Monique Mouton and Tracy Thomason offer new explorations into surface and shape with materials like cardboard and built-up marble dust and irregularly shaped canvases.
