This event has ended.

Shin Gallery presents the opening of our new retrospective on the Spanish art collective Equipo 57. This art group worked from 1957-1962, aiming to elevate the Spanish zeitgeist and art consciousness through avant-garde works concerned with themes of abstraction and mathematics. By painting, collaging, and sculpting abstract works using hyperbolic parabolas, Equipo 57 radically affected the Spanish avant-garde at a time when artistic conservatism was forced in Spanish society by the fascist Franco regime. Equipo 57 worked in a vast breadth of media, from experimental film and architecture to two-dimensional work and industrial design, and composed each of their pieces as a group, deliberately leaving works uncredited to a single member.

Equipo 57 has had other major shows at the Modern Museum of Art (New York, 1965), Palais des Beaux-Arts (Brussels, 1966), Museo de Arte Moderno (Mexico City, 1978), Reina Sofía (Madrid, 1993), Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris, 2001), Guggenheim Bilbao (2002) and has their works housed at major institutions including Reina Sofia in Madrid, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in Canada, Berardo Collection in Portugal, ARTIUM in Spain and Stander Bank Collection. Equipo 57 was featured in a 1965 group exhibit at the MoMA, but our show at Shin Gallery is their first solo show in New York and the United States. For this reason, we’ve transformed our 68 Orchard St. space into an immersive, museum-like exhibit to properly honor Equipo 57’s powerful legacy. The space is set up minimalistically, making the vibrant works pop and, in an attempt to emulate the cultural landscape in which Equipo 57 created, we have a looped, 1960s film of their other works playing on a retro TV.

Dive into the unmissable, revolutionary works of Equipo 57 at the opening of their first solo show in New York on Friday, June 29th at 68 Orchard St!
