This event has ended.

Next to Nothing presents Heads/Tails, an exhibition featuring the Yale MFA Painting/Printmaking graduates of 2018, divided into 2 consecutive group shows. The exhibition series, named Heads and Tails respectively, will show throughout the months of August and September at 181 Orchard Street.

Tails, open September 7 through September 30, will show work by Camille Altay, Felipe Baeza, Ernest A. Bryant III, Kyung Me, Clare Kambhu, Kathryn Kerr, Antonia Kuo, Leslie Martinez, Estefania Puerta, Julia Rooney and Ilana Savdie. There is a clear sense of identity in this class of artists, all of whose thesis pieces feel individual yet share community with one another - and whether one believes in the paranormal or not, there is certainly a presence in the room. A panel of salt and ash by Altay glitters and winks, but also weeps tears on humid days. The spirits of Baeza and Martinez’s paintings have eyes that follow the viewer as they walk around the candelabra by Puerta, whose hairy and waxy arms reach out from the wall.

Rooney’s text-based paintings seem to almost shout at the viewer, while Kuo’s ceramic sculpture seems to sit dignified like a museum object. Kambhu, Kerr, and Bryant’s paintings collapse emotion and perception into their respective panels, stirring up memories in our subconscious. Walking into the back room, one immediately notices the hanging saddle by Savdie, which swings slightly at the presence of others. Beside it, a ghostly but familiar character emerges from a triptych by Kyung Me. The entire gallery has become the host to an exquisite corpse which the artists have succeeded in animating. Indeed, each of the artists is using a language or feeling to make us understand an identity, memory, history or story, resulting in the intangible murmur around the room.
