This event has ended.

Ed. Varie presents Tyrrell Winston solo exhibition, Take ‘em to Church, with Sam Keller in the Guest Room.

Tyrrell Winston’s two dimensional and three dimensional works are the result of years of collecting, organizing, and reconfiguring discarded, dirty, (either physically or socially), forgotten objects. Winston has obsessively collected found objects from the streets of Manhattan and Brooklyn, part public service, part examination, and part fascination with the permanent energy left behind in these seemingly insignificant records of human existence. Continuing to work with the usual repertoire of materials, discarded cigarette butts, cigarette packs, basketballs, basketball nets, acrylic nails, drug ephemera, the work presented in Take ‘em to Church will push previous boundaries of size and scale, digging deeper into how behavior plays a part, takes a toll, on a micro and macro level.

Winston’s work also revolves around drawing parallels in the absurdity between symbolism of contrasting objects. The intentional mixture of these elements examine hope and hopelessness, resurrection and regeneration, vitality and recklessness. Each individual element used in Winston’s work carries its own identity, context, and inseparable association creating an automatic dialogue. Conjoining the ideas of nostalgia, salvation, and being born again, Winston aims to exalt these piles of hand selected refuse into new life.

Tyrrell Winston, b. 1985, Los Angeles, attended Wagner College. Winston currently lives and works in New York. Take ‘em to Church will be Winston’s second exhibition and first solo show with Ed. Varie. Previous exhibitions include Hurricane Maria Benefit Auction, Artha Project, Brooklyn, Solo presentation, Fine Arts Club, New York, and Weekend Show, Ed. Varie, Los Angeles.

As each new venue provides new challenges, they are also opportunities. Taking full advantage of literally every nook and cranny of the new East Village Ed. Varie location, a small entryway that connects the storefront to the neighboring residential building will act as a Guest Room aka mini gallery. For each solo exhibition the exhibiting artist will have the opportunity to curate an artist of their choice. Sam Keller will be the inaugural Artist’s Choice presentation. Keller also works in a variety of two dimensional and three dimensional pieces, employing both found and fabricated materials. On view in the Guest Room will be a series of Keller’s Can Works, found flattened beverage cans embellished with Swarovski Crystals. Sam Keller, b. 1986, New York City, holds a BFA in Painting from RISD. Keller currently lives and works in New York.
