Black & White Gallery/Project Space presents Rolling Houses a solo exhibition featuring new work of the Spanish-American artist Isidro Blasco. Internationally recognized from the start of his career, Blasco made NYC his hometown and inspiration. In this new body of work he continues to contemplate private and internal landscapes that have long influenced his practice. The works in the show have a strong sense of places where nothing is certain, except for permanent uncertainty. They provide an immersive experience of constructed escapisms referencing different areas of the city. They reveal the artist’s unwavering attachment to his hometown having somehow internalized its contradictions. Blasco does not mean to overcome the genuinely disquieting uneasiness of today’s reality, neither criticize the conditions that led humanity there. Instead, he suggests embracing and exploring the hometown’s environment, where everything looks familiar, yet nothing is what it is or used to be.

Isidro Blasco was born in Madrid in 1962 and has lived in New York since 1996. An award winning artist, he was a sculptor in residence at the Spanish Academy in Rome in 1991, the recipient of a Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant in 1998 and 2010, and of the Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in Visual Arts in 2000. His works are in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Tweed Museum of Art, and the Chicago Institute of Contemporary Art, among others. Isidro’s work has been shown at P.S.1/MoMA and the Whitney Museum, as well as in solo shows at the Reina Sofia in Madrid in 2004 and internationally in Shanghai, Sydney, Lisbon, Chile, San Paolo, Rome, etc.
