This event has ended.

Ezair Gallery in collaboration with curcioprojects, is excited to present Guy Stanley Philoche’s first solo exhibit with the gallery, Come Fly With Me. Many observers may compare Philoche’s latest series of paintings to Frank Sinatra’s 1958 classic song about a romantic runaway trip. Slightly cliched until you realize that Philoche has been on a long trek himself – Haitian born to a Connecticut upbringing then Yale educated and currently in NYC. Philoche certainly conjures a sense of nostalgia, however, his intention is to highlight the concept of the shared journey between artist and viewer.

In each of the paintings there is a section of the surface loaded with heavy paint reminiscent of city walls thick with wheat-pasted posters, ads, tags, graffiti or just a mysterious whitewash. Momentarily flying across these surfaces are paper airplanes or butterflies or both; a longing to get away. Made from the reality of collaged dollars and euros, some of the airplanes and butterflies leave behind delicate gestural trails of their travel. The flight comes to an abrupt halt by a bisecting line, a delineated border of metallic paint not to be crossed. On the other side waiting is a swath of gentle, warm and inviting color, a place of respite or escape for the weary travelers.

Another interpretation explores the revolutionary alterations provided by cryptocurrencies and virtual reality. Your avatar can now use bitcoins to “fly” to an augmented reality for simulated interactions with other avatars. The two of you creating fond memories of a seamless glow of abstract transactions with no inherent material or personal value that has been detached from its system of circulation. Ol’ Blue Eyes would be melancholy.

Philoche has had over eighteen solo exhibits and over thirty group exhibits with extensive media coverage in Artvoices, DNAInfo, LI Pulse and Whitehot Magazine. He is included in over eighteen corporate collections including Google, Deutsche Bank, Barclay Investments, and Merrill Lynch.
