This event has ended.

LMAKbooks+design present Dragon Curve, an immersive installation of objects, wall pieces and home goods by Ellen Van Dusen. The second floor gallery space is wrapped in the designer’s pattern “Arc”-inspired by the “Dragon Curve,” an infinite fractal pattern first described by NASA physicist John Heighway in the 1960s.

In her work, Van Dusen often utilizes mathematical or conceptual rules to create patterns, isolating one or two factors in order to produce a complex image. For this exhibition, she created the pattern by rotating a simple shape-an arc-at a 90° angle, which never crosses itself and does not meet at the ends. Van Dusen has explored this continuous and infinite curve in various iterations, with different widths, colors, and media. It is a study of each variable within the context of the pattern.

Ellen Van Dusen is a designer behind the eponymous brand, Dusen Dusen. In 2010, Van Dusen launched a womenswear line known for its bold, original prints on versatile and wearable silhouettes. Each season, the Dusen Dusen collection is developed and inspired by fine art, commercial & naïve design, and the brain’s reaction to color, form, contrast and movement. In 2015, the brand expanded with the launch of Dusen Dusen Home, a home goods line that includes bedding, throws, pillows and towels. Ellen Van Dusen was born and raised in Washington, DC and currently resides in Brooklyn, NY
