Behind every cultural revolution, there is a certain primal energy that drives the essence of its change, fervently yanking at the seams of cultural stasis or inertia. This primitive energy often gets obscured by the sheer newness of the cultural development, which narrows our attention to the specifics of the fresh “thing” at hand, rather than the essential force propelling it forward. Similarly, this veil of newness and content shrouds us from analyzing cultural developments beyond what they will do in our specific temporal moment, due to the blurred lens of the contemporary where the present can only easily be comprehended as the present, and not as the distant past it will soon become. Though technological and cultural breakthroughs today might just be the building blocks to much larger cultural paradigms of the future, we can only laud their purpose and importance in the context of the contemporary moment. Stuck in the lens of the present, our culture is primitive in ways we cannot yet comprehend. […]
