signs and symbols presents Superarchitectura, a site-specific and experimental in-process exhibition by Costa Rican artist/architect Andres Carranza. In 2014, Carranza was invited to New York for a solo exhibition, in which we (literally) locked him inside the gallery space for 12 days to be completely immersed in his process and create a work in-situ. The result was a floor-to-ceiling, all encompassing painting which enclosed the viewer completely. An entanglement between painting and performance, an emphasis was placed on process and not the final result as, Carranza stated, “I feel a sense of irrational poetry latent in the humble or violent eternal qualities of paint. The meaning of the work is in its process, it’s the pure act of painting.” Fast forward to today - 2018 - and once again we find ourselves on the LES for a second solo exhibition; Carranza has been invited back to create a site-specific work, but this time instead of painting he will approach sculpture and the medium of clay with the same process-oriented formality as before….
