Higher Pictures presents new work by Katherine Hubbard. Hubbard uses photography, performance, and text to explore the relationships between language, physical site, and political history.
During her 2016 residency at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas Hubbard staged a performance inside an unfinished architectural project by Donald Judd. She arranged rocks on the floor into words, enlarged to the scale of the human body; you, for, me, and for faced members of the audience seated in each corner of the otherwise empty space. In the photographs on view, which do not document the live performance but rather fold the event back into Hubbard’s layered engagement with the site, Hubbard shifts the camera’s perspective to move the viewer through the space, at times revealing the building’s architecture and at others privileging language as she pans across rocks that spell out for, you, end, the, me, and, and their. The pronouns you, me, and their allude to the various groups of people, separated by time and circumstance, who share an experience of this place. In one print, a single large “S” abstracts language into shape and form while being simultaneously an indicator of plurality. Reading the photographs in the round from left to right, the words elide, forming fragments of communication: you - send - for - them - and - their - you - send … In her project Hubbard questions dominant, facile narratives and the ways in which photography can be used to perpetuate them. Her photographs demand an active and embodied parsing of a picture and equally of the gestures deployed in its making.
Katherine Hubbard (b. 1981) received her MFA from Bard College in 2010. Recent solo exhibitions of her work include stages at Baxter St. Camera Club of New York (2017) and Bring your own lights at The Kitchen (2016). Her work was included in A Collection of Slow Events at The Luminary in St. Louis, Missouri (2017); The Artist’s Museum at The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston (2016); and Greater New York at MoMA PS1 (2015). Hubbard’s performances have been presented at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas; Konstfack in Stockholm, Sweden; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Hubbard lives and works in Brooklyn.
