New Release presents a selection of new works by UCLA MFA 2018 graduates from the Painting, Sculpture, Photography & New Genre departments.

Adrian Abela (b. 1989, Malta) studied architecture in Malta and Milan, and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. His projects lead from an interest in a particular material or narrative into an attempt at creating parallel experiences of the human condition, sustaining it with past and future realities. The conception and execution of his projects often involve other individuals; he uses architecture-derived approaches to create informed work and establish relationships that challenge people’s perspectives on the subject.

Carey Coleman (b. 1991, Virginia) has exhibited nationally including the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art; Ruffin Gallery at the University of Virginia; VanDernoot Gallery, MA; New Wight Gallery at the University of California, Los Angeles; Millard Sheets Art Center, CA; and Human Resources Gallery, CA. She earned an M.F.A. at UCLA (2018), a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (2015), and a B.A. from the University of Virginia (2014).

Coleman Collins (b. 1986) is an artist, writer, and athlete from Stone Mountain, GA. He employs printmaking, sculpture, video, and installation to contend with issues related to the notion of an African diaspora, world history, linguistics, psychoanalysis, and post-colonial theory. He recently graduated from UCLA with an MFA in New Genres. He was a 2017 resident at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and will be a participant in the Whitney Independent Study Program in the fall of 2018.

Shasha Dothan (b. 1987, Israel) has exhibited nationally and internationally including at The Ramat Gan Museum of Israeli Art, Petach Tikva Museum of art, blum & poe Gallery, 6/67 Gallery, AJU,Jerusalem cultural season, Driveway 327, Fresh paint 7 Art Fair. Dothan earned an M.F.A. at University of California Los Angeles, New Genres area (2018) and a B.F.A at Shenkar College, Multidisciplinary Art Department (2013). She was an Hamburg University of Applied Sciences exchange student in Hamburg, Germany. Dothan received the John Baldessari Family Foundation Scholarship for 2017-18. Dothan teaches and curates art exhibitions one of which was I AM ERICA in 2017 and is a founding member of the art collective Anti Mehikon.

Nasim Hantehzadeh’s (b. 1988 Oklahoma City, OK) work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in galleries such Lefebvre and Fils in Paris, France; ISA, Umbria, Italy; Mana Contemporary, Chicago, IL, and Skibum McArthur, Los Angeles, CA. Hantehzadeh grew up in Tehran, Iran where she started her art education at the Art and Architecture Tehran Center University in 2007. Soon after, she moved back to the United States to continue her art studies and earned a BFA degree at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2013, and an MFA degree at the University of California, Los Angeles in 2018. Hantehzadeh is the recipient of Resnick Scholarship, D’Arsy Hayman Scholarship and the Art Council Award at UCLA.

Kamaria Shepherd (b. 1991, Houston) has exhibited nationally and internationally at the SoCal MFA Juried Exhibition at the Millard Sheets Art Center in Pomona, CA; the UCLA MFA #1 at New Wight Gallery at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA); Black Light at the Otis Graduate Studios in Los Angeles, CA; Palazzetto Cenci at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Rome, Italy; and Circolo Degli Artisti in Rome, Italy. Kamaria earned an M.F.A. in Painting and Drawing from UCLA (2018) and a B.F.A. in Painting from RISD (2015).

Sean Sprague (b. 1981, Toronto) is a visual artist based in Los Angeles that works with the photographic medium. His work has been exhibited internationally and featured in publications such as American Photography and Time. His practice has been recognized by the Toronto Arts Council, the Ontario Arts Council, the Magenta Foundation and the Wenner-Gren Foundation. Sprague studied photography at the Ontario College of Art & Design in Toronto and received his MFA in Art from the University of California Los Angeles.

Hiejin Yoo (b. 1987, Germany) has exhibited at ltd Los Angeles, CA; Smart Objects, CA and Nicodim Gallery, CA. Her work was recently included in the Hort Family Collection in New York and she will be in a group show at Paul Kasmin Gallery (NY) this summer. Yoo earned an M.F.A. at University of California Los Angeles (2018), a B.A from Seoul Women’s University and a Post Baccalaureate/B.F.A from School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Yoo has an upcoming solo exhibition at Half Gallery in the Fall of 2018. She lives and works in Los Angeles.
