Every year, NURTUREart works with students from Juan Morel Campos High School to bring arts into the school and students out of the classroom. Now in its 9th year, Project Curate engages students fully in the curatorial process with a professional emerging curator to plan, organize, and mount an exhibition. The students experience the entire curatorial process including visiting professional artists’ studios, connecting with arts professionals, developing arts writing skills, installing an exhibition, and learning arts administration. This year students worked with curator-in-residence Allison Peller to curate Social STATUS: UPDATE.
Through the curatorial process, we—the students of Project Curate at Juan Morel Campos High School—explore the ways in which inequality is created and perpetuated through preconceived notions of social status based on a person’s ethnicity, nationality, occupation, wealth, and other circumstances. These divisions continue to be enforced and are considered to be the norm. The artworks included in this exhibition challenges and inspires viewers to break the boundaries between social classes. It’s time for an update!
