This event has ended.

Matthew Marks presents Terry Winters: 12twelvepaintings, the next exhibition in his gallery at 523 West 24th Street.

The dozen canvases on view were completed in 2017. Each is five feet wide and almost seven feet tall and has been built up in layers of oil, wax, and resin. Winters begins each painting as a drawing, or a composite of drawings. The drawings themselves incorporate and modify found imagery, which is largely technical in nature. These found images are reframed and given a new pictorial context. Winters develops this pictorial language in an intuitive and improvisational process: “I use this found imagery as a model, to see how images can be torqued or tweaked, made more poetic and expressive.” In several paintings, the networks of marks appear warped by forces and pressures, while in others they orbit and spin around a central point. On one level, the paintings’ single-word titles describe their key compositional features (Grid), dominant pigments (Cinnabar), or formal resemblance (Cell). But this lyrical dimension also contributes to another layer of meaning, something Winters has described as a hypothetical narrative: “One takes information from the world and out of it creates another possible world.”

Terry Winters (born 1949) lives and works in New York City and Columbia County, NY. His work has been the subject of numerous one-person museum exhibitions in the United States and Europe, including Tate Gallery, London (1986); the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (1991); the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (1992); the Whitechapel Gallery, London (1998); Kunsthalle Basel (2000); the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (2001); the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin (2009); Kunsthaus Graz, Austria (2016); and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (2016). A mid-career survey of his drawings, “Terry Winters: Facts and Fictions,” is currently at the Drawing Center in New York through August 12.
