This event has ended.

The title of Jia-Jen Lin’s exhibition Funes’ Broken Mirror references the character from Jorge Luis Borges’ novella Funes the Memorious, whose memories are forever imprinted in his mind as a vast mirror of the world.

This installation will transform the space using 8 reflective stainless steel sheets in an arrangement derived from a photo of earthquake remnants from Lin’s hometown in Taiwan. Combined with video projected onto the ceiling and reflecting off of the steel panels, text, and various sculptural elements either found/altered, created, or appropriated, this body of work offers a visual interpretation of memory via its physical manifestation in objects.

As the reflections of the objects and video images resonate with themselves and with other elements in the space, all of the objects lose their original meanings. They are open to new associations and experiences created by whoever enters this moment of hyper-awakening that is reminiscent of Funes’ dream.
