Art Alumni Show is the inaugural exhibition featuring the works of alumni who have graduated from the Department of Art and Art Professions.
Curated by Chrissie Iles, Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Curator, Whitney Museum of American Art.
This exhibition of alumni from New York University’s Fine Art Department brings together a group of artists whose work articulates the intersection between the coloniality of power, geo-political rupture and displacement, personal and collective ritual and memory, and the relationship of the natural world to bio-technology. Sculptures, ceramics, sound, painting, video and drawings evoke interior sensory and emotional states, and reconfigure fragmented memories as traces. A series of prints examines the implications of outsourcing and globalization, and the imperialistic myths embedded in familiar products. A group of video works uses storytelling to open up new readings of key moments in the political histories of countries including Bolivia, South Korea, and the Indonesian island of Rhun. The self-contained ecosystem of a Biosphere becomes the site for exploring the potential for new models fusing technology and biological systems to influence the future of the planet. The global reach of the works in this exhibition grounds our subjective experience within a deeply complex cultural and geo-political history.
