Amos Eno Gallery presents Unique to the Nature, a group exhibition of paintings by Amos Eno Gallery members Nancy Elsamanoudi, Hatidža Mulić, Heidi Neff, Mimi Oritsky, Mary Saran and Meredith Starr.

Unique to the Nature explores painting as a medium with its own language, its own past, present and future. Each artist begins from a different position with regard to the nature of paint. In some instances, the image is allowed to succumb to the materiality of paint and in others form that is “unique to the nature” of paint, adhering to no external reality principle. What these continued variations show are the legacy of medium-specificity beyond modernist painting and the infinite configurations that give rise to contemporary painting.

Nancy Elsamanoudi received an MFA in Painting and Drawing from Pratt Institute (2014). The artist lives and works in New York City. Her second show in NYC will be held in October 2018 at Amos Eno Gallery.

Hatidža Mulić was born in 1976 in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina. She immigrated to the United States in 1995 subsequent to the Bosnian War as a political refugee. Her paintings often address autobiographically consequential experiences along with xenophobia and bigotry that are ever-present in the 21st century. She is currently teaching in Drawing and Painting Department at the University of Georgia.

Heidi Neff earned her MFA in painting from the University of Iowa in 2002 and her BFA in painting from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1994. Since then, she has exhibited in alternative spaces in New York City and across the country. Heidi Neff currently teaches painting and drawing at Harford Community College in Bel Air, Maryland.

Mimi Oritsky received an MFA in Painting and Printmaking from the Univ. of Pennsylvania, School of Fine Arts and a BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art. Oritsky has received Purchase Awards: Reading Public Museum, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts/Arcadia Univ. and Residence Fellowships from the Heliker-LaHotan Fdn, the Millay Colony for the Arts and the Artists for Environment Fdn. She lives and works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Mary Saran started painting circles. Then kept painting circles. Then the circles became swirls, the swirls became mounds, the mounds became landscapes, and those landscapes became worlds. Now her work exists between painting and sculpture, pushing the boundaries of mixed media.

Meredith Starr is a fine artist who works in painting, drawing, sound and video to express her conceptual ideas. Her work gives visibility to the invisibility. With her accumulation of marks on paper she considers what we are left with when a memory, an experience, or a visual image is processed through a screen of social and individual anxiety. A recent piece from her series “You Bite Me, I Crush You” was featured at the Limner Gallery in Hudson, NY. Meredith is a New York based artist whose artwork has been exhibited in East Hampton, New York, and Hong Kong.
