Andrew Lampert was born in St. Louis and based is in Brooklyn. He has produced an eclectic and extensive body of films, videos, performances and photographs since the late 1990s. He regularly exhibits in international contexts with past shows including: Whitney Museum of American Art (2006 Whitney Biennial), The J. Paul Getty Museum, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, MoMA PS1 (Greater New York 2010), New York Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, and Art Gallery of Ontario among many other venues. He is preparing a new performance titled My Greatest Sneeze, and in Winter 2019 will be the inaugural artist in the New York residency program of the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. Lampert frequently writes on art and cinema, edited The George Kuchar Reader (Primary Information, 2014), co-edited two volumes of Harry Smith Collections Catalogue Raisonne (J&L Books, 2015), co- edited Manuel Delanda: ISM ISM (J&L Books, 2018), and with Howie Chen is co-author of the forthcoming book Go Deep: How to be Human in the Art World. He has restored over 300 classic and obscure moving image works by iconoclastic artists like Stan Brakhage, Robert Breer, Bruce Conner, Tony Conrad, Maya Deren, Hollis Frampton, Robert Frank, Ken Jacobs, Danny Lyon, Marie Menken, Carolee Schneemann, Paul Sharits, and Stuart Sherman to name a few. Lampert currently teaches at The Cooper Union and The City College of New York. He is one half of the creative firm Chen & Lampert, and his videos are distributed by Electronic Arts Intermix.
James Krone uses painting as a screen with which to measure the transferability of subject and subjectivity. Most recently he has been using the image of a parrot to initiate paintings that initiate other paintings. The resulting works emerge where assumptions of a shared index are threatened, if inevitable. Krone has exhibited internationally in venues not limited to but including M LeBlanc, Kavi Gupta, Tanya Leighton, Night Gallery, Galerie Nagel Draxler, Richard Telles and Circus Gallery.
Zeena Parkins is an electro-acoustic composer/performer, multi-instrumentalist, improviser, and pioneer of contemporary harp performance, who re-imagines both the acoustic harp and an evolution of her original electric ones, through the use of expanded playing techniques, preparations, and custom designed processing. Within a shifting constellation of improvised/composed/gesture/touch/ space/sound/noise/music, Parkins is engaged in translations of sonicity within and between environments: architectural/emotional/topographical/social. Parkins has received commissions from the Whitney Museum of American Art, Tate Modern, Sharjah Art Foundation, Ne(X)tWorks Ensemble, Montalvo Arts Center, Either/Or, Ensemble Son, Donaueschinger Musiktage, Sudwestrundfunk, Bang on a Can Spit Orchestra, Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Dance by Neil Greenberg, Thin Man Dance, Inc./John Jasperse Projects, DD Dorvillier // Human Future Dance Corps, and iLand. Awards include Doris Duke Artist Award, DAAD Fellowship, Foundation for Contemporary Arts, The MAP Fund, NYFA Artist Fellowship, Atlantic Center for the Arts Master Artist-in-Residence, Herb Alpert/Ucross Residency Prize, Honorary Mention/Prix Ars Electronica, and three New York Dance and Performance Bessie Awards, for her groundbreaking work with dance. Parkins has performed and/or recorded with: Bjork, Ikue Mori, John Zorn, Fred Frith, Christian Marclay, James Fei, Butch Morris, Elliott Sharp, William Winant, Brian Chase, Nate Wooley, Nels Cline, Yuka C. Honda, Tony Buck, Magda Mayas, Maja Ratkje, Mette Rasmussen, Steve Beresford, Barry Guy, Cyro Baptista, Okkyung Lee, Matmos, Yoko Ono, Yasunao Tone, Pauline Oliveros, Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore, Lee Renaldo, ROVA Saxophone Quartet, Myra Melford, Miya Masaoka, George Lewis, Joan La Barbara, David Behrman, Jeff Kolar, and Green Dome with Ryan Sawyer and Ryan Ross Smith. Zeena Parkins is a Distinguished Visiting Artist at Mills College in Oakland, California.
Jeff Preiss is a New York based filmmaker. In the 1980s he was co-director of the Lower East Side film venue Films Charas, and a board member of The Collective For Living Cinema. His work from this time was included in The Museum of Modern Art’s survey on the history of 8mm and has been recently preserved by The Warhol Foundation and Anthology Film Archives. In 1984 he traveled to Berlin to shoot the Rosa Von Praunheim produced Vampire Film, Der Bis directed by Marianne Enzensberger. Beginning in 1987, he served as the Director of Photography on a series of short films and feature documentaries including Let’s Get Lost by Bruce Weber which won the Venice International Film Festival Critics Award and an Academy Award nomination for best documentary. Soon after his career took on directing commercials and music videos (for Iggy Pop, Malcolm McLaren, REM, B52s / Apple, Nike, Coke, etc.). In 1989 he co-founded the production company Epoch Films. Since then he has produced a serial project of installations exhibited at The Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Wexner Center for the Arts, Musée d’art Moderne de la Ville Paris, Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin and the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. He has made collaborative work with artists including Joan Jonas, Andrea Fraser, R.H. Quaytman, Christian Philipp Müller, Josiah McElheny, Nicolás Guagnini, Karin Schneider and Anthony McCall. In 2004 he completed an 8 screen film installation on architectural cinematography commissioned by Rem Koolhass that traveled with the OMA retrospective Content. His work is in the collection of The Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Hessel Museum of Art and Anthology Film Archives. In 2005 Preiss co-founded the experimental gallery, Orchard in New York. His program there was instrumental in the founding of Light Industry, a venue for film and electronic art in Brooklyn, where he currently serves on the board. His 2012 experimental feature film, Stop was a selection of the 50th New York Film Festival and in 2014 his first feature narrative Low Down won the Sundance Film Festival for cinematography and the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival for best actress: Elle Fanning. Preiss is currently in preproduction on a second feature film and working on new collaborative projects with Josiah McElheny, Leslie Thornton and Madeline Hollander.Friday, November 16th: Opening Performance with James Krone
