“The landscape in front of the painter is a fragment of the felt-known world. It is at once made up of every individual particle that he can see and know and yet contains the all-ness through which he knows each particle to be related to every other particle. He knows there is an individuality to every leaf on the tree, yet he must see the tree totally. He can only paint what he feels about the tree, because he can only see what he feels about the tree. His very act of seeing is expressive of his feeling.

The artist sees the landscape as a symbol, not as objective reality!”
