This event has ended.

The Journal Gallery presents “Western Shade,” Graham Collins’ third solo-exhibition with the gallery.

In “Western Shade,” Collins exhibits new sewn paintings alongside recently produced bronze sculpture. The sewn works are assembled from segments of found paintings that are meticulously arranged– following a predetermined system which is often thematically organized– and stitched together to form abstract compositions to redistribute and recontextualize the intent of those that produced the original works. The bronze works, made up of banal objects, detritus, snack foods, and pieces from the artist’s studio, reference the dual lineage of Western sculpture as both decorative and conceptual.

Graham Collins was born Washington, D.C. in 1980. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Collins received his BFA from Corcoran College of Art in Washington and his MFA from Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. Recent solo exhibitions include “Graham Collins” at Halsey McKay Gallery, New York, New York, 2017, “Graham Collins” at Almine Rech, Brussels, Belgium, 2016, “The Village” at Bugata & Cargnel, Paris, France, 2015, “Stadiums” at The Journal Gallery, Brooklyn, New York, 2015, “Concert in the Park” at Jonathan Viner Gallery, London, United Kingdom, 2014. His work has been included in several group exhibitions, among them “Brass Tacks” at Anat Ebgi, Los Angeles, California, 2017, “Hundred Year Hand” at C. Grimaldis, Baltimore, Maryland, 2017, and “Viewing Room: Graham Collins and Jennie Jieun Lee” at Marlborough Contemporary, New York, New York, 2016.

In coordination with this exhibition, the gallery will present “TENNIS ELBOW,” a project room of weekly rotating solo presentations.
