This event has ended.

Soloway presents Caught In a Looped Gesture, an exhibition by Terttu Uibopuu. In a journey that begins in areas affected by Hurricane Katrina in Florida and Louisiana, and continues to the post-Soviet Baltic country Estonia, Uibopuu traces subtle signs of trauma and recovery in the lives of people and places still healing from natural disaster and political occupation.

Caught In a Looped Gesture brings forward a selection of works from Uibopuu’s photographic series E.S.E (East South East; 2014-16,) where she shifts between various sites in Eastern Europe and the American South. Born and raised in Estonia, Uibopuu has lived through the Soviet occupation of her country, until she moved to the United States at age seventeen. In joining these backgrounds together, she engages in a photographic dialogue between separate landscapes and cultures connected by the drama of survival, A drama which Uibopuu delivers through the minute and routine gestures of resilience of her subjects.

Terttu Uibopuu is a photographer, a bookmaker and a visiting assistant professor of art at Wesleyan University and faculty at ICP. In 2012, she participated in the AIM program at the Bronx Museum of the Arts. She has received her BFA in photography from Columbia College of Chicago and her MFA in photography from Yale University, where she was also awarded the Alice Kimball Traveling Fellowship.
