571 Projects present A Matter of Time, an exhibition of landscapes: mixed media works and UV cured flatbed prints by accomplished artist Dorothy Simpson Krause. Krause’ work is exhibited widely in galleries and museums both in the United States and abroad, and featured in numerous current periodicals and magazines. A Matter of Time builds on her recent exhibit of her work, Golden Days, and will be on view from March 8 through April 29, 2017 at 571 Projects, 56 Park Street, Stowe, VT. A painter, collage artist and print maker, Krause incorporates digital mixed media into her art. A recurring concern in her work is global climate change, and her layered landscapes memorialize the ephemeral beauty of the natural world. The artist will be present at the opening reception on March 10, 5-8 pm, at 56 Park Street, Stowe Vermont.

Climate change is real and undeniable. As an artist, Krause has, for decades, explored and addressed her concerns about rising sea levels and the vulnerability of our way of life through her work. A Matter of Time refers both to the ever-increasing threats to our ecosystems, and the artist’s knowing choices of materials and methods. Landscapes feature marshes, dunes, and rivers. Materials used include found copper, silver leaf, aluminum - minerals mined from the earth’s diminishing bounty. Her work often has the feel of ancient, historical documents or objects, their luminosity precious and mysterious. Long Road to Sunset (2006, UV cured flatbed print with mixed media, 48 x 32 in.) carries the viewer down a disappearing dirt road, as clouds pile up on the horizon. Wood grain shows through the printed image, intensifying the drama of the sky. Wherever this place is, we are alone with sublime nature. Intrinsically curious, Krause has a long career of experimenting with the capabilities of print making aided by her close relationship with HP. Employing ancient and cutting edge art making techniques she constantly pushes boundaries.

In addition to being Professor Emeritus at Massachusetts College of Art, Krause is a member of Digital Atelier, an artists’ collaborative. Her work has won many awards including the Smithsonian/ComputerWorld Technology in the Arts Award (1997), and the Kodak Innovator Award (2000). Her work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, including The Landing Gallery (Rockland, ME); Evos Art Institute (Lowell, MA); the Attleboro Museum of Art (Attleboro, MA); The Judi Rotenberg Gallery (Boston, MA); 571 Projects (New York City). Her work is in many museum collections including The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Dalarna Museum (Dalarna, Sweden); The Smithsonian Museum of American Art (Washington, DC); Art Complex Museum (Duxbury, MA); State Museum (Novosibirsk, Russia); and The DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum (Framingham, MA). Krause was selected as the inaugural Helen M. Salzburg Artist-in-Residence at the Jaffe Center for Book Arts at Florida Atlantic University (2012).
