Gitler &_____ presents the forthcoming two-person show from Gregory Burak - Graham Preston: Inside/Outside. For this exhibition both painters share their distinct approach to portraiture and form, interplaying light, line and shadow within a host of scenes that adopt narrative elements ranging from the autobiographical to the natural and surreal. Inside/Outside will comprise four new paintings from each artist.

Exhibited together, these works yield a binary narrative. Burak’s Inside depicts scenes of calm repose, yet inhabited by characters whose posture and inaction introduce an undercurrent of reserved panic. Burak’s deft application of directional geometry and muted colors throughout his rooms—from the décor and wall dimensions to the characters’ own posture—helps create simple contrasts of light and dark, autonomy and confinement. Any sense of equilibrium that viewers may otherwise infer from these darkly comedic snapshots is upended in an instant.

Preston’s Outside are snapshots of ephemeral pause. The artist intertwines natural elements with surrealist interlopers, which assume the form of cosmic light and monolithic fields. Within these expansive scenes, a deeply personal subtext infuses each canvas; Preston blurs the lines that separate the real from the imagined, the ghostly from the earthly, and each one—regardless of lineage—casts a shadow commensurate to its form and place, abound with color and painterly gesture.
