This event has ended.

33 Orchard presents Structures, a selection of sculptural works by New York artist Jesse Durost. The exhibition will include “Field Recordings”, a ghostly wall piece with variable dimensions, comprised of layered stretcher frames, translucent fabric, paper, and paint. Also on view will be “Untitled“, a 12’ x 7’ x 3’ meandering structure composed of painted plywood and corrugated roofing plastic.

Durost’s approach to art making involves modular components which are playfully combined and re-combined in pursuit of a compelling tension. He is drawn to the pedestrian and the ordinary, utilizing raw wood, everyday hardware store items, and a neutral, atmospheric color palette. The resulting works have an awkward, ephemeral quality—simultaneously accessible and transcendent.

Durost explores the edges of intentionality, consciously steering away from predictable decisions. “I try to work as a reactive conduit as opposed to an algorithm,” he says. He combines and layers elements in ways that seem alternately controlled and haphazard. Often, there is an implied function that emerges. His work can feel like a formal, elevated version of the scrap-pile behind the shed, or the ad-hoc invention of a back-yard tinkerer.

Jesse Durost was born in 1976 in Shenandoah Valley, Virginia. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Columbus College of Art and Design. He has exhibited at Fourteen30 Contemporary in Portland, Oregon and The Soap Factory in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He lives and works in New York City.
