This event has ended.

FIRST STREET GALLERY presents the first solo exhibition of Anahita Mekanik: a collection of assemblages spanning the last ten years.

Re·membered explores the reality of displacement through visual poetry using the emotional power of everyday objects.”Having fled my homeland as a child, the concept of belonging and the process of reintegration deeply resonate with me. Much as there is a diaspora of people, there is a world of discarded or forgotten objects that connect us through time and space”.

Mekanik uses these broken and homeless objects as building blocks to create new forms imbued with the memory each individual component carries. The dress worn by a beloved grandmother or the chair that once held a child become part of a new identity.

By bearing witness to the moments and lives gone by, the viewer participates in Mekanik’s ritual of transformation. And, in the act of sharing, old and new realities are reconciled. The artist’s personal narrative is transcended and the reconfigured forms become a universal meditation on the passage of time and the cycles of life.
