Lévy Gorvy’s first New York exhibition with the American artist, Kairos will feature new works by Pat Steir. These paintings, produced in her New York and Vermont studios, manifest a methodological and philosophical continuity with—and also an exciting formal departure from—her celebrated Waterfall series. Comprising Steir’s first exhibition of new work in over three years, the paintings in Kairos are lush and sweeping in scale, with such evocative titles as Implicit System, Heart, Aporia, Melancholy, Poros, and Trance. The featured works revisit the dialogue between intuition and accident that has defined Steir’s work since the 1970s in a manner that renews these themes for the present day.

Notions of “non-intervention” and the “disappearance” of the self are at the heart of Steir’s conceptual painting practice. Open to the influences of her materials and of natural forces, Steir’s paintings appear as spectral residues that attest to both the passing moment of their making and the protracted flow of time.
