This event has ended.

Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects presents Nature Lover, a solo exhibition of new paint- ings by the Brooklyn-based painter Giordanne Salley. This is Salley’s second show with Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects.

Giordanne Salley was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio. Salley received her MFA in painting from Boston University in 2013. Referred to by Roberta Smith of the New York Times as a “young artist to look out for,” her paintings explore love and nature—young, nude figures embracing, running, and inspecting pine-filled woods.

The artist creates a patterned space built on intuition and imagination. She describes her work as a daydream, the places and memories she thinks about while living and working in New York City. The subjects in her paintings are curious and care-free, completely intertwined with the nature that surrounds them.

In Salley’s new show, Nature Lover, it is hard to distinguish where the branches of the trees begin and the limbs of her figures end. The simple forms and gestures become resonant with meaning. The scenes take place just as the sun is setting and the moon is rising, the warm, circular shapes delightfully placed as the backdrop for her figures. Conjuring the fleeting afternoon light, the images echo warm laughter and sweet sad- ness. They capture the complex, playful moments of being in love.

Salley worked at the Vermont Studio Center where she had her first solo show in 2011. Her first solo show in New York City was at Steven Harvey Fine Art Project’s Projector Space in 2015. Her work appeared in New American Painting in 2013. She was also included in the show curated by Aliza Nisenbaum, “Intimisms,” at James Cohan Gallery in 2016.
