This event has ended.

Thierry Goldberg presents No Touch, an exhibition by Vanessa Gully-Santiago. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery.

Whether through painting, drawing, or video, Vanessa Gully-Santiago uses sexual themes to depict power dynamics with undercurrents of violence.

The works in “Tender Detachments” portray isolated figures in ghostly tableaux, inhabiting empty or sparsely furnished rooms. There, either alone or with others, the characters engage in fetishistic acts, balancing intimacy with various levels of acquiescence.

Vacillating between the everyday and the darkly sinister, each scene retains a degree of voyeurism, positioning the viewer as both witness and participant in the activities of these disconnected subjects.

Vanessa Gully-Santiago (b. 1984), currently lives and works in New York. She holds an MFA from Rutgers University, where she was the recipient of the Paul Robeson Emerging Young Artist Award, and a BFA from The Cooper Union. Her first solo show was held at American Medium (Brooklyn, NY) in 2016, and she has recently exhibited at Foxy Production (New York, NY), C. Grimaldis Projects, (Baltimore, MD), 247365 (New York, NY), Peninsula Art Space (Brooklyn, NY), Smart Objects (Los Angeles, CA), and the Bruce High Quality Foundation (New York, NY). Gully-Santiago has participated in residencies at the Vermont Studio Center and Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild, and her work has been written about on Artspace and Hyperallergic.
