Andrew Edlin Gallery celebratesthe summer season with a selection of paintings by three artists presented for the first time in our gallery: Jillian Mayer, Dasha Shishkin, and Summer Wheat.

Jillian Mayer (b. 1986, Miami, FL) explores how technology impacts our identities and experiences. Her recent paintings animate figures absorbed by the digital screens of their devices, poised in idyllic fields of blue and green. Painted one-dimensionally, these works speak to our habitual distractions and the virtualization of nature. Her work is currently on view in Past Skin at MoMA PS1 in New York through September 10, 2017. Her solo exhibition, Slumpies, was held in 2016 at the Perez Art Museum in Miami. Mayer’s multimedia work has been presented in various institutions including the Bass Museum of Art (Miami), the Museum of Contemporary Art, Montreal, the Guggenheim Museum (New York) and film festivals like Sundance, SXSW, and the New York Film Festival.

In his review of her 2013 solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara, Charles Donelan wrote that Dasha Shiskin “combines virtuosic traditional contour drawing with a devilishly transgressive sensibility. Even as one admires the artist’s extraordinary facility with line, the aesthetic pleasure of these brightly colored, incident-filled scenes becomes complicated by the sense that their content consistently crosses over certain lines of everyday decorum.” The art of Dasha Shishkin (b. 1977, Moscow) was also the subject of a solo exhibition, I surrender, Dear, at the CAC Cincinnati in 2012. Her works are in the permanent collections of various institutions including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Los Angeles Contemporary Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Dallas Museum of Art and the Hamburger Kunsthalle (Hamburg).

Summer Wheat’s (b. 1977, Oklahoma City) large-scale works recall the compositions of cave paintings but with textile-like surfaces. She presents feminized ecosystems, blending the present with the primordial, the human with the mythological. In 2016, she was awarded the Artadia Prize at NADA New York, and more recently, had a work purchased by the Dallas Museum of Art during the Dallas Art Fair’s acquisition program. Her current solo exhibition, “Full Circle,” is on view at the University of Washington’s Henry Art Galley (Seattle) through September 17, 2017. Her next solo exhibition will take place in September at the Braverman Gallery in Tel Aviv, Israel.
