My works are devices for controlling or simulating nature. This year’s solo exhibition is focused on simulation. Specifically, reproducing the universe / galaxy using reflections like a mirror ball. Of course this does not represent the exact position of the stars, but will suffice. I like the absurdity of using mirror balls to simulate the sacred universe.

I am interested in how we attempt to control or simulate nature. Our ancestors had the wisdom to coexist with nature. Currently we are still developing our civilization to head for utopia, but what is our vision of that utopia? We choose to put houseplants in our room rather than live in the deep forest. We choose to go to the planetarium in the city, rather than look up at the starry sky from the top of a mountain. People today find their utopia in such ways.

Of course, this is fake and artificial. But even though I yearn for the lifestyle of the past, I wouldn’t leave behind a convenient, comfortable modern lifestyle. Perhaps, I would like to exist in a fictional paradise while dreaming of the past. I’m interested in this distortion. Can we truly be healed when devices control nature? Furthermore, can we perceive the beauty and mystery of natural phenomena when we use cheap objects to simulate them? My works are experimental apparatuses to investigate this distortion.
