This event has ended.

Hionas Gallery presents a two-artist exhibition featuring new works by Karlos Cárcamo and Robert Otto Epstein. Both artists will be present. This inspired artist pairing brings together two painters who adopt quite distinct approaches to pattern, coloration, and geometric abstraction. The union, however, is not without a common denominator.

Cárcamo’s interests lie in the history of modernism and formalist abstraction, re-contextualized through the prism of urban culture. His paintings begin with the fluid gestures of a graffiti tag on a color plane; these components are then built upon as he fabricates more formal structures and interplays blocks of complementary color fields. Cárcamo’s signature microphone sculptures capture the energy and movement indicative of graffiti and breakdancing, bending and curving until these static structures adopt an air of impermanence.

Epstein moves in the opposite direction. The artist’s subjects begin as color-coded bits of abstraction; these building blocks, as it were, come together in myriad and unexpected ways—square-by-square, row-by-row—to eventually yield holistic portraits, grid portraits, or complete grid-based abstractions that pulsate with color and movement. His process of repetition is harmonic; individual pieces form a structure which evolves to become patterns, which act as both the painting’s subject and its blueprint all at once.

Karlos Cárcamo (b.1967, San Salvador) was raised in Jamaica, Queens and earned his MFA from Hunter College in 2000. His work is included in the collections of Museo del Barrio, Deutsche Bank, and Museo de Arte de El Salvador, among others. He lives and works in Beacon, NY.

Robert Otto Epstein (b.1979, Pittsburgh) studied philosophy and political science at the University of Pittsburgh, and law at the University of Durham, UK. He has exhibited widely in the U.S. and Europe, and his work is included in the corporate collection of Facebook. The artist lives and works just outside of New York.
