The Journal Gallery presents “The Middle Riddle,” Johanna Jackson and Chris Johanson’s first collaborative exhibition in New York. The large-scale installation, produced both in their studio and at the gallery, will feature new painting and design by the Los Angeles-based artists.
Johanna Jackson was born in 1972 in Springfield, Massachusetts and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. Solo and two-person exhibitions include “What It Means to Learn” with Dana Dart-McLean at Human Resources in Los Angeles, California (2015); “The Big Fig” at the Portland Museum of Modern Art, Oregon (2013); and “Money on Fire,” a video commission for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, California (2011). Her work has also been exhibited in group shows at the Oakland Museum of California; Marlborough Gallery, New York; Roberts & Tilton, Los Angeles, California; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, California; among others.
“BowWow,” a two-person exhibition with Johanna Jackson and Sahar Khoury, curated by Tony Cox, will open at CANADA, New York, on May 5, 2017.
Chris Johanson was born in San Jose, California in 1968 and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. He has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, including “Will and Be Going To” at Altman Siegel Gallery, San Francisco, California (2016); “Continuity Escapes Me (My Selfishness in Los Angeles)” at Galleri Nicolai Wallner in Copenhagen, Denmark (2014); “Chris Johanson” at the Portland Museum of Modern Art in Oregon (2014); “Within The River of Time Is My Mind” at LA MoCA Pacific Design Center, Los Angeles, California (2013); “Windows” at Mitchell-Innes & Nash, New York, New York (2012); and “Backwards Towards Forwards” at Kavi Gupta, Chicago, Illinois (2010). Johanson’s work has been included in group exhibitions at the Berkeley Art Museum, California; Karma, New York; Suzanne Geiss Gallery, New York; the San Francisco Art Institute, California; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, California; Grey Art Gallery, New York; and the Museo de la Ciudad de Mexico in Mexico City, among many others.
Chris Johanson’s solo exhibition “Possibilities,” at Mitchell-Innes & Nash, New York, runs from April 6 through May 13, 2017.
Johanna Jackson and Chris Johanson have shown their collaborative work in several exhibitions, including “House of Escaping Forms” at Fleisher/Ollman Gallery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2016); “Johanna Jackson/Chris Johanson” at South Willard in Los Angeles, California (2014); and “Conclusions on Boundaries” at Art of This Gallery in Minneapolis (2008); in addition to having produced a furniture commission for The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, California; and multiple mural commissions in Portland, Oregon.
