This event has ended.

Kentler International Drawing Space presents Travelers and Strangers, a solo exhibition of new drawings by Brussels, Belgium-based artist Lucile Bertrand.

Bertrand explores topics of travel and landscape as they relate to the movement of people, be they migrants or tourists. She ponders the shifting accessibility of spaces depending on the condition of the trip and the different words used to describe travelers (i.e. expatriate vs. deportee). Based on true-life stories, her diptychs map out journeys both pleasant and perilous that occur along similar geographic paths. She poetically juxtaposes examples of restricted movement with the migratory patterns of birds, which are allowed to travel freely.

Travelers and Strangers features large-scale pencil and gouache drawings with text narrating each journey, as well as reflective rescue blankets bearing 3D travel routes. Routes are color-coded to indicate either danger or leisure. Acting as a conduit for these stories, Bertrand creates deeply moving personal maps that bear witness to the subjectivity of travel across borders. Her own perspective as an artist who has lived and worked on numerous continents, including Europe, North America and Asia, informs her sensitive investigation.

A brochure with an essay by Charlotta Kotik accompanies the exhibition.
