Ceres Gallery presents Out of Bounds, felted sculptures by Susan Kaplow. Kaplow’s work falls outside the bounds of the usual felting practices, which employ the softest fibers and aim for the smoothest surfaces to create wearable and decorative objects. Instead, Kaplow chooses rougher fibers and techniques that preserve a reference to the animals that provide the raw material. She adds cooler elements— metals, bones, thorns— to play against the warmth of the felt, increasing the dynamic tension in the sculptures.
Kaplow’s aesthetic is inspired by and conveys the tension inherent in nature and in our lives, where violence and beauty, coming to life and dying away, blessings and curses are bound up together. Her work invites viewers into the mystery of all this and into a broader definition of beauty.
