This event has ended.

The Salmagundi Club proudly presents the ninth annual American Masters Exhibition and Sale, on view in the club’s recently renovated Main Gallery. Founded in 2008 by club member and art collector Tim Newton, this exhibition and sale was designed as a fundraiser to support the historic club’s continued presence in the future of American representational art, and has since become one of the most anticipated and highly attended realist-art events in New York City.

American Masters 2017 features 48 internationally recognized professional painters, both established and emerging talents from across the country, and 116 finished works, including oil paintings, watercolors, and drawings. The curatorial direction of the show continues to be led by Newton (now Chairman of the Board and CEO of the Salmagundi Club), whose experience in the art-collecting communities of major blue-chip
art shows in the West inspired him to start American Masters on the East Coast. This year, Newton invited American Masters exhibiting artist Quang Ho to offer curatorial input on the list of exhibiting artists. As a result, American Masters 2017 maintains its founding foundation with landscape, maritime, and still life subject matter created in classical realist or impressionistic styles, while incorporating the fresh flair and vision of figurative, interior, and urban street scenes painted in more expressionistic styles.

“I’m extremely pleased with how this year’s show has come together in such a dynamic yet visually cohesive manner,” says Newton. “We are showcasing some of America’s premier painters, and we are certain that New York audiences will enjoy the artistic excellence and diversity of these exceptionally skilled artists. American Masters 2017 provides us with a singular opportunity to purchase one-of-a-kind masterpieces, and I look forward to welcoming local and national collectors alike to the Collector/VIP Preview and Gala & Sale in October.”

Newton has modeled the sale for American Masters off of museum shows, and the purchases for American Masters artwork happen through a ballot-box draw on the opening night of the Gala & Sale. All potential buyers must purchase a ticket/ballot book for the Gala & Sale, and put their ballot in the box beneath the painting(s) of interest. At 7:30 p.m., one name per painting will be drawn, and that individual gets to purchase the work. Once the evening concludes, any remaining artwork will be available for purchase. All artwork will remain on display in the gallery through October 27.

In addition to American Masters’ main event, the Gala & Sale — which will be attended by many of the exhibiting artists — this year’s show features several special events and first-time features. They include a private collectors’ preview reception, live demonstrations and presentations, discussions, a partnership with Collectors for Connoisseurship, and a 65-page, full-color commemorative catalogue, featuring each of the 48 exhibiting artists.
