This event has ended.

Chapter NY presents Mall Passer, Adam Gordon’s second solo exhibition with the gallery.

Gordon’s multi-disciplinary practice focuses on the construction of experience. Shifting between totalizing installations, constructed encounters, video, and painting, his work trains our attention toward everyday existence. While the form is fluid, the effect remains uncanny: a dimly lit room clouded with crippled debris, painted snapshots of persons and places with specious identities. Latent with the residue of the familiar, these deadened spaces become charged with a haunting density, as reality itself reads as palpably opaque.

For Mall Passer, Gordon will present a series of new paintings, representing interior and exterior spaces void of humanity. By framing these seemingly empty environs, absent of activity, Gordon challenges the viewer’s narrative expectations. Reality becomes at once mask and maquette, as the banality of these spaces becomes saturated with the anticipation of some act. Aesthetically inviting, these works nonetheless bar the viewer from entry, echoing Gordon’s total installations in their unsatisfying hollowness. Bounded by minimal interventions, these formally constructed, lifeless spaces are elegant in their economy, affording an emotional texture to perceived nothingness.

Adam Gordon lives and works in New York, NY, and received his MFA from Yale University in 2011. He has had solo exhibitions at Chapter NY, New York and Hunter/Whitfield, London. Gordon’s work has been included in group exhibition at Andrew Kreps, NY; National Exemplar, NY; Boates Fine Arts, São Paulo; Night Gallery, LA; and will be included in an exhibition at Galleria Zero, Milan.
