ART 101 presents new work by Kate Lawless and Paige Martin.

A professional dancer/choreographer, Paige Martin brings her designs into a gallery setting. Having begun with the making of small objects and wooden rings, Wickerware will include the very first full-scale renditions of objects inspired by traditional crafts and natural materials.

Kate Lawless is inspired by the Andromeda Galaxy. “On a dark moonless night, you can just see this with your naked eye as a smudge in the sky. It is helpful to use your averted (or peripheral) vision. Your peripheral vision is more sensitive to light than your straight on vision. Also, you should allow your eyes to become dark acclimated. It takes at least 15 minutes before your eyes start detecting more and more light.”

Paige Martin is a Bessie award-winning native Texan best known as a performer in the company of Dance by Neil Greenberg and dancer with RoseAnne Spradlin, and Maria Hassabi, to name a few. In addition, she has appeared in works of Tony Oursler, John Jesurun, Charlie Atlas, and toured extensively with Richard Maxwell’s Neutral Hero. She is also a certified Zero Balancing practitioner. Her ring designs have been displayed at Paul Kasmin’s PK Shop, the Smithsonian Institute Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum’s shop, The Hammer Museum L.A. design shop, and MaRS L.A.

Kate Lawless is a painter living and working in New York City. She received her BFA from Cooper Union in 1990 and her MFA from Columbia University in 1997. She was awarded a NEA grant in 2015. In 2015 Kate has shown in a three person show at The Kingston Museum of Art in Kingston, NY, a solo show at The Chashama Gallery and a group show at The Denise Bibro Gallery.
