Armstrong’s new paintings of panoramic ocean scenes vary from serene contemplations of boundless water to cacophonous rushes of foamy surf. Armstrong relates his imagery to a meditative process where water is both an object and symbol. He modulates an atmosphere of dense white hues, often dividing his canvases at an amorphous horizon in an emblematic gesture representing the meeting of the principles of Shiva and Shakti, or, the intercession of formlessness and form. In this way, out of misty white skies, undulating waves take form.
