This event has ended.

A reference to fifty-four countries that constitute the African continent, the title of 1:54 establishes the parameters of the fair’s ethos: as a platform that strives to represent multiplicity and showcase the diversity of contemporary African art and cultural production on an international stage.

1:54 New York 2016 will showcase 17 exhibitors, presenting over 60 African and African diasporan artists at Pioneer Works, an outstanding industrial building in the vibrant and creative neighborhood of Brooklyn dedicated to the nurturing and showcasing of art.
1:54 is accompanied by an educational and artistic program curated by Koyo Kouoh and includes lectures, film screenings and panel debates featuring leading international curators, artists and art experts.

The 2016 New York edition of 1:54 will showcase 17 galleries from 9 countries, in addition to an impressive selection of works by over 60 artists working in various artistic mediums and who come from a unique blend of geographical backgrounds, comprising 27 countries: Angola, Belgium, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, France, Gabon, Ghana, Italy, Kenya, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Madagascar, Malawi, Morocco, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Togo, Tunisia, UK, USA and Zimbabwe.

1:54 was initiated by Touria El Glaoui in 2013 in London. May 2016 marks the second edition of 1:54 New York, while 1:54 London will return for the fourth consecutive year from the 5-9th of October 2016 at Somerset House.

Born and raised in Morocco, Touria El Glaoui holds an MBA in Strategic Management and International Business from Pace University, New York. She began her career in the banking industry as a wealth management consultant before moving to London in 2001 where she undertook various business development positions in the Telecom/IT industry. She has spent over five years working between London, various African countries and the Middle East within a business development framework. She is a member of the Executive Committee of the Friends of Leighton House, London and a trustee of the Marrakech Biennale.
In October 2013, she founded 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair (www.1-54.com), held in London and New York on an annual basis. 1:54 has quickly emerged as Europe’s original and leading art fair focusing on contemporary art from Africa and the African diaspora. As its director, Touria has independently acquired sufficient resources for the initiative through sponsorship, fundraising and grant writing, forming firm partnerships with leading institutions, corporate sponsors, and educational entities across Europe and Africa. In 2016, the second edition of 1:54 New York will be held across the 5-8 May at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn, while the fourth edition of 1:54 London will be held across the 5-9 October at Somerset House.
