Governors Island

This event has ended.

The venerable Sculptors Guild (79 years old and counting) returns to Governors Island for their traditional summer group show in Nolan Park, Building #15. This year’s timely theme, American Twist, features an exciting collaboration with artists from New Orleans’s Antenna Gallery, with a planned flow of shared work between NYC and New Orleans. The range of work shared reflects the diversity of Guild membership and inclination, and is enriched by the counterpoint of contributions from New Orleanian artists. Guild members designed their work to be travel-sized – fitting specific parameters – in preparation for a showing in Louisiana during the spring of 2017. The show also has some large-scale installations with videos, sound, and scents, as well as outdoor works, including a collaborative outdoor installation by Elizabeth Knowles and William Thielen that features a clustered wave of small, colorful flags that wrap around the side of the house, visible from a distance, welcoming viewers into the excitement of the show.

Not for nothing, the setting for the show is sublime. Governors Island is reached by a short ferry ride from Lower Manhattan or Brooklyn. Nolan Park, Building #15 is one of a handful of historic officers’ homes on Governors Island. Painted bright yellow, this two-story wood-framed house, filled with art, has an ample front porch replete with rocking chairs, and looks out onto a shady tree-filled green. It’s a perfect place for savoring adventurous art, meeting and speaking with artists, and enjoying a summer holiday.
