Whispering, Howard Gross’ fourth solo exhibition with Causey Contemporary, continues his explorations of the elements of the natural world, in particular the garden, as a metaphor for the interior world of human thought and emotion.
The exhibition includes his mixed media relief sculptures, scratchboard drawings, colored pencil drawings and oil paintings. Known for the intricacy and delicacy of line on the drawings and the minuscular but exacting components that make up his signature sculptures, Howard turns from one to the other in his studio using the zen like qualities of the repetitive sculpting motions to soothe his hand and thoughts from the tiny exacting lines of the drawings and visa versus. Howard sees the sculptures as an direct translation of the drawings where each acts as a form of puzzle solving.
