Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects presents Free Time: Part 2, the second half of a summer invitational group show. Where Part 1 celebrated the play spirit in contemporary art with light and color, Part 2 examines a darker take on freedom. This work suggests the abandonment of order, in favor of exploring dreams, nightlife, underworlds and sideshows, or simply the shadows and voids of landscapes and studio spaces.
Free Time: Part 2 will be on view July 6 - August 7, 2016 and includes the work of painters Ryan Cobourn, Jesse McCloskey, Michele Mirisola, Heather Morgan, Marie Roberts, and ceramicist Catherine White.
Ryan Cobourn’s gestural abstract paintings are based on memories and experiences of the figure, the landscape, and the garden. The allusions and references remain slightly out of reach. There is a physical, tactile play between the veiling and exposing of forms with creamy, viscous paint, which can feel agitated, tender, and melancholic, tender, all at once. Cobourn received his MFA from Indiana University. His work is exhibited by Bryant Street Gallery, Palo Alto, CA and Ann Connelly Fine Art, Baton Rouge, LA. He was the recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant and the Vermont Studio Center Artist Grant.
Jesse McCloskey utilizes a process of painting, drawing, and layering cut, colored shapes of paper to construct and revise the imagery of his paintings. The final work becomes dimensional – with thick strata of paper, and spray paint, acrylics, and Flashe paint. McCloskey constructs an image world that is equal parts rock n’ roll and New England Gothic – women, clocks, crows, high-heeled boots, and witches. Thick black outlines often trace the curve of a vase or a female body. McCloskey received his MFA from Parsons School of Design. This year, McCloskey was included in the American Academy of Arts and Letters Ceremonial Exhibition for purchased work. He has received a New York Foundation for the Arts Grant as well as a residency at Yaddo.
Michele Mirisola paints her studio and its things. In this series of paintings, she focuses on the windows of her space and at times, its darkened reflected contents. Mirisola currently has a solo show up at KMR Arts in Washington Depot, CT. Earlier this year, she was the subject of a solo exhibition at Beehaus, an artist-run space in Dallas, TX. Her work has been included in group shows at TSA Gallery in Bushwick as well as 184 Project Space. This summer she heads to residencies at Byrdcliffe in Woodstock, NY and Hewnoaks in Lovell, ME.
Heather Morgan paints, in her own words, “cigar-chomping chicks, androgynes, harlots, fighters, dancing queens, the starved, the tragically hip, the desperate (but not serious).” Morgan will create an installation of about 15 small paintings and objects in the gallery. The installation will serve to demonstrate how Morgan’s paintings create a world – with characters based on herself, culturally constructed identities, and an environment of musical and television icons, pin-ups, pets, kitsch and vintage settings, objects, and dolls. The installation will also reference Morgan’s studio, where dozens of paintings hang salon-style, along with altar-like still life set-ups, fabrics, and repurposed frames. Morgan received her MFA in painting from Yale University. This December, Morgan performed and exhibited her work at the Tampa Museum of Art. She has shown her work at Eikelman Galerie in Dusseldorf, as well as Ladengalerie in Berlin.
Marie Roberts is the Artist-in-Residence at Coney Island USA. Roberts expands the forms of the traditional sideshow banner. She is a native New Yorker who grew up near Coney Island. Roberts is a professor of art at Fairleigh Dickinson University. She received her MFA at Queens College. Her work has been included in shows at the Brooklyn Museum, PS 1, and Yale School of Art. Her work is also included in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Transit Authority NYC, The Village Voice, and CNN. Roberts’ work is currently on display at Jeffrey Dietch’s Coney Art Walls.
Catherine White is a master potter whose work intentionally revels in the irregularities of the markings produced by her touch. Included in this show are pieces finished in a wood-fired kiln with no added glaze, instead they have a natural ash glaze—as the wood burns it creates ash which melts into place. White completed an MFA in ceramics at Antioch University, Maryland. Her work is included in the collections of Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Sackler Gallery of Asian Art. For the last thirty years, White has had yearly commissions for the restaurant Omen-Azen in Soho. In 2010, White was commissioned by the US State Department to create a set of Inauguration Text Plates as a gift presented by President Obama to the President of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. Later in the year, she was commissioned to create tea canisters as state gifts presented by First Lady Michelle Obama to United Nations spouses.
