Jocelyn Hobbie Exhibition
Fredericks & Freiser Gallery
This event has ended.
Fredericks & Freiser presents an exhibition of new work by Jocelyn Hobbie. For over 20 years, Hobbie has painted the figure. From her earlier more complex narratives to her most recent, flawlessly articulated paintings of imaginary women, Hobbie has fused themes of mortality, eroticism and the persistent disaffection of contemporary life.
As a member of a generation of artists noted for their “return” to figurative painting, Hobbie has honed a formal inventiveness in which neoclassical figures with pensive expressions are depicted amid bold and striking patterns. Her heightened naturalism and enhanced degree of saturated color reveal an uneasy relationship to realism and firmly root these unusually psychological paintings in the age of post abstraction.
Jocelyn Hobbie was born in Northampton, MA. She has had solo exhibitions at Jack Tilton Gallery, New York; Bellwether, New York; and Kerry Schuss, New York. She is featured in Painting People: Figure Painting Today by Charlotte Mullins, published by D.A.P. This is her seventh solo exhibition and her second at Fredericks & Freiser.
