This event has ended.

Plus 81 Gallery presents a solo exhibision Black / Gold by NY-based artist Joji Kojima. The title “Black / Gold” has two meanings.
One is black and gold as the theme of the jewelry collection of the eleven pieces against the golden wall.

The combination of black oxidized sterling silver and polished 18-karat yellow gold produces a strong visual contrast and it is created by using Japanese traditional tecnique, Mokume-gane.

The golden lines that appear like ripples are reminiscent of the Rinpa art that prospered in the Edo period, and yet enable the jewelry to shine in the modern scene.

Mainly having published rather big art pieces as jewelry, he would like as many people as possible to take this opportunity to get to know the world of JOJI KOJIMA, who is working on smaller pieces for daily use for the very first time.

The other meaning concerns black and gold as the theme for composing the whole exhibition.
The gallery is divided into two contrasting worlds: one black and the other gold.

This symbolizes several sets of opposing elements, and the viewers will be framed between two walls.

Being located between the two opposing worlds of the black and the gold, as if between the natural and human worlds, the dark and the light, or the heaven and the hell, they can feel and interpret the elements freely all the more for the contrasts.

Joji Kojima was born in California, United States of America, grew up in Japan. After learning to make jewely by himself at the age of 15, he started learning the basic art. While he was undergraduate in Department of Graphic Design, Tama Art University, Tokyo, he started to make piecies for films and musicians including LADY GAGA.
